Phota Wildlife Park
The day started at 7:15 am. we left portumna for our 3 hour journey to phota. About 2:30 hours into our trip, we could start seeing Cork and we knew we were near.
We arrived at phota at around quarter past 10. When we first arrived there we were taken into 'classrooms'. we played some games including 'sheepdog'. where a shepard had to guide sheep (people who were blindfolded) into a pen. The next game was sort of like Chinese whispers. we got a picture of a lego creation and we had to pass it through words to the builder at the end.
After we finished the games we got split up into our 2 class groups. We then set out to go look at the animals. The first animals that we came across were the giraffes. We got to see male female and young giraffes. We learned that a giraffes tongue is half a metre long and is blue so that the giraffes tongue doesn't get sunburnt as there tongue hang out of their mounts so often.
Next we made our way to the kitchen. We saw that most animals are mainly fed veg over fruit as fruit is very sweet and may rot the animals teeth. if an animal needs to take medication they usually mix the medication in with nutella so that they think they are getting treat. They have a freezer where they keep frozen foods, such as treats. They have a fridge for fruit and veg and they also have a fridge full of raw meat and this particular day it was full of chicken.
The next animal that we came across was an ostrich. I learned that an ostrich has one very sharp claw which can take out all of your insides in one go. We then faintly saw the zebras. Zebras actually have black skin with white stripes and not the other way around.
Next we passed the cheetas. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth. They can run really really fast but only for a short distance. Then we saw the flamingos. Flamingos naturally have white feathers but their feathers turn pink from the food they eat (salmon). In zoos they get supplements to help make their feathers pink.
We then had our lunch break. After out lunch break we got to see more interesting animals. We got to see the lions and the rhinos. I learned that lions should not eat food every day because in the wild they cannot catch food every day. The rhinos seemed to be the most spoilt animals in the whole park. They even had security laser fences around them. This is because in a zoo in london people escaped into the zoo and killed a rhino and took its horn as these are worth alot of money.
We then spent the rest of the day shopping in mahon point shopping centre. We arrived home at about 9 . Overall i really really enjoyed the day.
